Research Overview
IURD director Jason Corburn has worked with Nairobi partners and informal settlement residents for the past decade. The research has focused on several settlements throughout the city of Nairobi, with a focus on inclusive and participatory approaches that put the needs of urban poor at the center of the work. Over the years several studio courses have focused on informal settlement upgrading in Nariobi, and both students and faculty have worked with NGO partners, settlement residents, and local government to document existing conditions and create participatory plans for entire communities that are isolated from city services and resources.
