Yehuda Kalay’s interests lie in exploring the applications (and implications) of New Media (computing and telecommunication technologies) on architectural design methods, process, and products. He teaches courses in computer-aided architectural design, design collaboration, developing multi-user virtual environments, artificial intelligence in design, the nature of design knowledge, design decision-making, and more. His current research focuses on game-based multi-user virtual environments (MUVE) and multi-disciplinary collaborative design.
Professor Kalay is a founding member and has served as Director of the UC Berkeley Center for New Media from 2004 to 2007. He is a founding member and past president of ACADIA (Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture). He served as editor-in-chief (Architecture) of Automation in Construction (an international refereed journal published by Elsevier). Twice he has held the Lady Davis Professorship at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology. He has authored and/or edited seven books, and published over 100 articles on various topics related to computer-aided design, including building representation, performance evaluation, multi-disciplinary collaborative design, knowledge-based design, and virtual place-making.
