Candidates must have a Ph.D., or substantial professional experience and advanced professional degree, and be working on topics or questions relevant to work being done by researchers at the Institute. After finding a faculty sponsor and securing his/her support, candidates may then submit an application packet for one of two application periods. Candidates’ applications should include:
Only a limited number of visitors can be accommodated each year. Decisions will be made on the basis of what the visitor can contribute to the intellectual life of the Institute and its associates.
Candidates are responsible for identifying and contacting their own faculty sponsors. Contact and background information for UC Berkeley faculty can be found in the university's various departmental websites. An "A to Z" list of websites can be found on the UC Berkeley home page.
Visiting Scholars are expected to participate in the Institute's mid-day seminar series and, in many cases, will be asked to present their research to students and faculty.
Visiting Scholars are required to provide their own support funds. Our Visiting Scholars are typically funded by their own universities, private grantmaking institutions, or government programs, either at home or abroad. Funds are not available from the Institute.
Visiting Scholars have many of the privileges that UC Berkeley faculty enjoy, including library use, the option to audit courses, and access to various university services (for a $200 fee). Our scholars join seminars, attend lectures, and participate, to varying degrees, in the intellectual life of the university.
The Institute is presently unable to offer staff support or private office space to visitors. However, Visiting Scholars will have access to a shared office on campus with computers linked to the university's network. They will also have mailboxes and access to photocopy and fax machines.
