Robert Cervero is a professor of city planning and faculty researcher at IURD, whose areas of expertise include transportation, housing, urban design, and land use in the U.S. and abroad. His 1997 book, Transit Villages in the 21st Century, presenting a clear case for transit village developments as well as the framework for implementing them, is lauded as a major contribution to planning and urban design literature. He also has conducted seminal research on jobs-housing balance, travel behavior impacts of traditional neighborhood development, and effects of transit investments on land-use patterns. He recently completed a nationwide study on transit-oriented development (TOD), assessing its benefits and costs and highlighting best practices. He is currently in the final phase of a longitudinal study of car-share programs, examining how car co-ops impacts the ways people travel and how this affects public transportation ridership, gas use, vehicle emissions, and vehicle ownership.
