Sustainable Development

Chote Soponpanich Thai-Berkeley Program

Over the past two years, students and faculty from Chulalongkorn University and the University of California have collaborated to jointly prepare sustainable tourism development plans for Krabi Province and environmental management plans and policies for Koh Lanta.  The results of these projects have had numerous and significant positive impacts on Thai and Berkeley students and faculty as well as building deeper understanding of the benefits of sustainable city and regional planning among policy makers and residents of Krabi Province and Koh Lanta.
Based on these results, Mr. Soponpanich, the Faculty of Architecture of Chulalongkorn University and the Institute of urban and Regional Development at the University of California Berkeley have agreed in principal to formalize our collaboration.  The initial term of the program will be five years, renewable upon mutual agreement.
The overarching objective of the program is to foster sustainable urban and regional development in Thailand's cities and regions and to strenghten and deepen professional, technical and social relations between Thailand and California.
