Housing/Real Estate Development

Mexico’s Emerging Suburbia: Local Impacts of National Housing Policy

The expansion of the national housing finance system in Mexico has led to a new housing production system characterized by large, high-density developments of single family homes, built at the urban periphery. The central hypothesis of my dissertation is that these new developments are re-shaping three aspects of urbanization in Mexico: urban growth patterns, the spatial organization of people within cities, and the planning and regulation of urban development. I will test the hypothesis quantitatively in three separate sections; utilizing existing census, geographic and administrative data, and constructing a unique data set on urban development and planning regulations in Mexico through a survey of local governments.

The Pattern and Distribution of the Economic Effects of Plutonium Deposition in the Denver Metropolis

This project is the result of a three-phase study. Each phase was motivated by the question, "What is the impact or effect on property values of proximity to the Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant?" Phase I measures the effect of proximity to Rocky Flats on 3 property categories – commercial, multi-residential, and vacant land – which had sales records available in digital or computer form. Phase II measures the impact or effect of proximity to Rocky Flats on property values in the remaining category, single-family residential, which was not available in digital form. The final phase measures the amount of property devaluated within the Medium Plutonium Contour.
