The expansion of the national housing finance system in Mexico has led to a new housing production system characterized by large, high-density developments of single family homes, built at the urban periphery. The central hypothesis of my dissertation is that these new developments are re-shaping three aspects of urbanization in Mexico: urban growth patterns, the spatial organization of people within cities, and the planning and regulation of urban development. I will test the hypothesis quantitatively in three separate sections; utilizing existing census, geographic and administrative data, and constructing a unique data set on urban development and planning regulations in Mexico through a survey of local governments.
