Ira Michael Heyman, former Chancellor and Professor Emeritus at UC Berkeley, has a long history of law, regional/environmental planning, and policy planning in public service. He holds an A.B. in Government from Dartmouth College and a J.D. from Yale. After his chancellorship (1980-1990), he served as Counselor to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy, U.S. Department of the Interior (1993-1994) and as Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution (1994-1999). Currently, in addition to teaching Property to first-year students at the School of Law (Boalt Hall), he continues an active role with a number of advisory groups, including the Presidio Trust, Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee, and EDAW. He served as Interim Director of the Center for Studies in Higher Education at UC Berkeley (2000-2002) and holds a joint teaching appointment with the School of Law and the Department of City and Regional Planning.
