Donald Foley received his A.B. degree in Sociology and Political Science from Colgate University in 1938, his M.A. in Sociology from the University of Chicago in 1942, and his Ph.D. in Sociology from Washington University. After serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve and then as a planning analyst for the City of St. Louis in the 1940s, Professor Foley spent a year as a research associate at the Bureau of Applied Social Research at Columbia University. In 1953, he came to Berkeley, where he taught for more than 25 years in the Departments of City and Regional Planning and Architecture (part-time). Twice he has served as Chair of DCRP. He has been a visiting scholar at the London School of Economics and the Centre for Urban Studies in London. From 1982 to 1994, Professor Foley was a dealer in out-of-print university press books. Publications include Controlling London’s Growth: Planning the Great Wen and Governing the London Region: Re-organization and Planning in the 1960s. Since 1995, Professor Foley has been a volunteer with Friends of the Berkeley Public Library bookstores.
