Claus Bech-Danielsen, Architect and Professor, comes from Denmark, where he is employed at The Danish Building Research Institute, at Aalborg University (www.sbi.dk/medarbejdere/CBD/). He has written several books and carries several honorary positions in the Scandinavian scientific world. His expertise is concentrated in sustainability in architecture, housing ideals in Scandinavian modernism, renewal of social housing and architectural qualities in postwar housing areas, and new societal/cultural trends and the influence on contemporary housing design. While at IURD, he will work on three specific research projects, including a paper describing different approaches to sustainability in Scandinavian architecture. The paper will present three generations of sustainable constructions in Scandinavia and three types of environmental efforts in the built environment. Other projects include qualitative interviews and architectural analysis on second homes, and in a third study, “New Trends in Housing Architecture,” he looks into contemporary American housing architecture. He and his family are enjoying Berkeley, and he’s very impressed by the professional attitude at the University. He looks forward to discussing architecture, sustainability and planning with faculty, students, staff and other visiting scholars.
